Symmetry is considered one of the essential elements of beauty, and scientific studies have shown that people respond more positively to symmetry of the face and body. While some degree of breast asymmetry is normal and expected, significant differences in breast size or shape can lead to feelings of self-consciousness or embarrassment. For these women, breast asymmetry can be managed using a variety of breast enhancement procedures.

Dr. Otto Placik is a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in all types of breast enhancement, including the correction of asymmetry between breasts. Known as one of the best breast surgeons in Chicago, Dr. Placik has helped thousands of women in the Windy City and surrounding suburbs.

About Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry, in which one breast is larger, lower or differently shaped than the other, may be the result of many different possible causes including:

  • Congenital breast asymmetry or breast asymmetry that’s present from birth and/or results from developmental processes. This includes asymmetrical virginal hypertrophy, in which a young woman has excessive sudden growth of one breast, and may require corrective surgery before the age of 18. This also includes conditions known as constricted breast or tuberous breast deformity. Congenital breast asymmetry often results from musculoskeletal conditions such as scoliosis, pectus excvatum or pectus carinatum (pigeon chest).
  • Degenerative breast asymmetry in which both breasts are initially the same size, but one breast shrinks as a result of a localized disease or condition.
  • Acquired breast asymmetry as a result of mastitis (breast infection), uneven development during or atrophy after pregnancy/breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or exercise-related changes in breast size or shape
  • Surgery for mastitis or other conditions, including mastectomy or lumpectomy of one breast as a result of cancer diagnosis.
  • Aging that occurs at different rates in each breast.

Breast asymmetry and Breast Augmentation

Breast asymmetry can be corrected using breast reduction on the larger breast, breast augmentation on the smaller breast, or a combination of both to ensure that breasts are more similar in size and shape. Contact Dr. Placik, the top rated breast augmentation surgeon Chicago today to see what is right for you.A breast lift can be performed to correct sagging in either breast. Other breast deformities can be corrected at the same time, including constricted or tuberous breasts (often incorrectly referred to as tubular breasts) and inverted nipples, while large nipples can be improved using nipple reduction. Many women also request correction of asymmetrically enlarged areolae.

No matter what the causes of breast asymmetry, Dr. Placik can work closely with you to develop a customized approach toward treatment that resolves your specific concerns.

Breast Asymmetry FAQ

What is breast asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry is when the look of one breast differs significantly from the other. This can be related to size, shape, or position. Although no woman has breasts that are completely identical, the difference of a cup size or more or a significant variance in shape between breasts can cause problems with self-image, as well as concerns over practical issues like shopping for bras or swimsuits.

Why is breast symmetry important?

Both scientists and artists agree that symmetry is a major factor in determination of beauty. Faces and bodies are recognized as more beautiful when symmetrical qualities exist. While even Hollywood stars may have minor asymmetry, a larger, more conspicuous difference between sides can lead to feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious in ways that undermine your confidence.

How is breast asymmetry caused?

Numerous factors can influence breast development and result in unevenly sized or shaped breasts:

  • Localized disease or condition – Also known as degenerative breast asymmetry, this occurs when breasts begin similar in size but one shrinks due to a disease or breast condition. Surgery such as lumpectomy or radiation therapy may also cause one sided atrophy or decrease in size.
  • Natural aging – Each breast can react differently to gravity and other contributing stressors of aging
  • Drastic weight change – Either excessive weight gain or loss can cause an uneven increase or reduction in breast fat
  • Asymmetrical virginal hypertrophy – When a pubescent woman experiences excessive, sudden growth in one breast only
  • After pregnancy – The body’s response after breast feeding and/or pregnancy can result in an uneven redistribution of breast tissue
Does breast asymmetry increase cancer risks?

Yes. The risk of cancer development in women with breast asymmetry increases 1.5 times for each 100 ml increase in asymmetry.

Will correcting breast asymmetry through reconstructive surgery decrease breast cancer risk?

No. Women with breast asymmetry should regularly undergo cancer screenings. For women who choose to correct their asymmetry through breast augmentation, Dr. Placik can place the breast implants below the pectoral muscles to increase mammogram accuracy. In one Danish study, breast reduction did result in a lower risk of cancer.

What is the cost of breast asymmetry correction?

Since Dr. Placik may take one of any number of different approaches to improve existing breast asymmetry, the cost of surgery will vary from patient to patient. Dr. Placik and his staff strive to provide excellent value and can help you with cosmetic surgery financing to make your procedure even more affordable.

How can breast asymmetry be corrected?

Dr. Placik will examine your medical history and current breast condition to determine the best approach to take for your breast asymmetry. Common procedures include one or more of the following:

  • Breast reduction on the larger breast
  • Breast augmentation on the smaller breast with implants or fat transfer or tissue flaps
  • Breast lift for the ptotic (droopy) breast
  • Nipple and/or areolar asymmetry correction of inversion, projection or size
  • A combination of any of the above in order to reshape breasts to a more even shape and volume
