Liposuction, which is one of the most popular of all cosmetic procedures, can dramatically improve the curves and contours of the body. Although not a solution for weight loss, liposuction can be very effective in targeting fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise, like love handles or fat deposits on legs and thighs.

About Liposuction

Liposuction is ideal for patients who are at or near their body weight and wish to target stubborn problem areas that remain despite eating right and staying active. Patients should understand that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, and is not the procedure for significantly reducing excess body fat.

The best liposuction results are seen when lipo is used to fine-tune a patient’s existing figure and improve the appearance of the body through careful contouring. Common target areas for liposuction include the stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks, although liposuction can improve contours around the arms, knees, neck, chin or even “cankles.” Liposuction can also be used to perform male breast reduction in men with gynecomastia.

Dr. Placik offers multiple choices for liposuction:

  • TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION, WHICH IS OFTEN CALLED TRADITIONAL LIPOSUCTION, INVOLVES THE INJECTION OF A LARGE AMOUNT OF SOLUTION INTO THE AREA TO BE TREATED. THIS LIQUID SIMPLIFIES THE FAT REMOVAL PROCESS BY BREAKING DOWN AND EMULSIFYING THE FAT CELLS AS WELL AS CONSTRICTING BLOOD VESSELS TO LIMIT BLEEDING. TUMESCENT SOLUTION ALSO INCLUDES A LOCAL ANESTHETIC TO KEEP PATIENTS COMFORTABLE DURING SURGERY.
  • SYRINGE-ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION IS GENERALLY USED FOR SMALLER TREATMENT AREAS SUCH AS THE NECK OR FACE OR FOR LIMITED LOCALIZED FATTY DEPOSITS.
  • ULTRASONIC-ASSISTED LIPOPLASTY, ALSO KNOWN AS VASER OR LYSONIX. IT USES ULTRASOUND TO DISRUPT FAT CELLS AND ALLOWS EASIER EVACUATION. IT IS USEFUL FOR TREATING FAT THAT IS MORE COMPARTMENTALIZED WITHIN DENSE TISSUES SUCH AS THE MALE BREAST OR HIP (“LOVE HANDLES” OR “MUFFIN TOP”) AS WELL AS THE FEMALE BRA STRAP REGION. THE HEAT FROM THE LASER CAUTERIZES BLOOD VESSELS TO CONTROL BLEEDING, AND MAY ALSO HELP TIGHTEN THE SKIN FOLLOWING TREATMENT.
  • POWER-ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION IS ANOTHER METHOD OF LIPO THAT INCORPORATES MECHANICAL ENERGY TO DRIVE THE CANNULA TO FACILITATE FAT ASPIRATION USING SMALLER CANNULA TO MINIMIZE IRREGULARITIES AND DIMPLING.

Tummy Tuck vs Liposuction

Dr. Otto Placik explains the difference between his Chicago Liposuction and Tummy Tuck procedures. Learn how both procedures can treat fat and the benefits of each.

Tumescent liposuction is considered the gold standard of body contouring, although Dr. Placik may recommend alternative liposuction techniques for some patients. Regardless of which method Dr. Placik uses, a cannula, or thin tube, is inserted into the treatment area through tiny incisions. The fat is broken apart using one of the two liposuction techniques listed above, and the cannula is then attached to a vacuum that provides powerful suction to sculpt the targeted fat cells away.

The treatment of a small area with lipo may only require local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is best for more extensive lipo. Patients usually go home on the day of surgery. The incisions made for the cannula are very small and should heal to almost completely undetectable.

After liposuction, swelling and soreness are normal, sometimes accompanied by bruising. Dr. Placik will ask you to wear a compression garment for a week or two to help alleviate discomfort, keep swelling to a minimum and speed up the healing process. Although most patients can return to work and their daily routine in about a week, strenuous physical exercise, such as exercise or heavy lifting, should wait until at least 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Many of our patients considered getting liposuction for many years before finally taking the plunge. With the advanced techniques available from Dr. Placik, the time is right – why wait any longer to get the body you want? Recovery time is faster with the latest lipo techniques and technology, and our patients rave about the results. Nothing is more rewarding than happy patients who finally have a slimmer, trimmer profile with the help of our modern techniques. Our process involves using the most advanced liposuction Chicago has to offer, using the least invasive treatments to contour and sculpt the body and remove unwanted fat.

Liposuction FAQ

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a popular body contouring procedure that smoothes and reshapes the body by removing stubborn fatty deposits. Depending on the patient, excess fat is loosened by either tumescent liposuction or ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty. Once loosened, the excess tissue is removed using a vacuum that is attached to the cannula. Smaller treatment areas, such as the neck or face, may only require a syringe to remove fat.

What Types of Liposuction Are Available?

Traditionally, tumescent liposuction is the most commonly performed procedure for fat removal. With this method, a special saline solution is injected into the treatment area. The solution includes both a local anesthetic for patient comfort and medication that works to minimize bleeding and breaks down the fatty tissue for easy removal.

Power-assisted liposuction, or PAL, is the same as standard tumescent liposuction, with just one small addition: The tip of the cannula is motorized, helping to loosen the targeted tissue, which is then removed with suction. This is often a preferred rapid method for harvesting the fat used in fat transfer breast augmentation.

Ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), also known as VASERlipo® or Lysonix®, uses sound waves to liquefy fatty deposits for easy evacuation. This method is often preferred when targeting fat that is located in dense tissue regions of the body, such as the male pectoral region or female bra strap area.

Liposuction is safer than ever, and we can help you better understand everything you need to know about the procedure, recovery time, and what to expect after the procedure is completed. In our first consultation, we will spend all the time you need to help you learn all about the process, what to expect, and whether this is the procedure that will give you the results you envision.

Dr. Placik is not only a highly-skilled plastic surgeon – he is an artist in the field. It takes an “eye” for beauty to achieve outstanding results. We are committed to helping our patients achieve a body contour that is more pleasing, trimmer, and helping them finally be free from fat deposits on the body that will not resolve through diet and exercise.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE?

The best candidates are at or near a healthy weight for their height and build and want to slim down specific areas of stubborn fat, such as on the inner thighs or to eliminate a “saddle bag” or “muffin top.” Men and women considering lipo should be in good health overall and should continue to enjoy a healthy lifestyle after surgery in order to maintain their results long-term.

WHY DO I NEED TO WEAR COMPRESSION GARMENTS AFTER LIPOSUCTION?

Compression garments can help decrease swelling and bruising after lipo, as well as reduce the likelihood of seroma, the accumulation of excess fluid. These benefits translate to an easier, more comfortable recovery for the patient. Additionally, most patients report that compression helps minimize soreness and discomfort.

ARE LIPOSUCTION RESULTS PERMANENT?

Although liposuction does permanently remove the targeted fat cells, that’s not the same thing as preventing future weight gain. If you maintain your post-lipo weight and live a healthy lifestyle, you can expect positive long-term results from liposuction. However, gaining weight back again can result in the accumulation of new fat that can compromise your new look.

HOW MUCH DOES LIPOSUCTION COST?

The average cost of liposuction depends on many variables including the method of liposuction Dr. Placik recommends, the size of the area treated and whether additional procedures will be performed at the same time. Dr. Placik and his staff strive to provide value to each patient and can advise you on flexible cosmetic surgery financing options to make your lipo procedure affordable.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF LIPO?

Liposuction is a routinely performed procedure, although there are potential complications all patients should be aware of such as bruising, bleeding and the possibility of anesthesia reactions. Although uncommon, more serious risks associated with liposuction include nerve damage, irregular contours and infection.

Dr. Placik promises you his best possible care and attention. If you would like to schedule a private consultation to learn more about liposuction in Chicago, please contact us online or call us at 847-398-1660.

Can I Combine Liposuction with a Tummy Tuck?

Absolutely. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is routinely performed along with liposuction. When combined with a tummy tuck, likely areas for liposuction include the hips and the flank, the area commonly referred to as “love handles.” The two procedures complement one another quite well and can result in sleeker body contouring.

What Happens During My Procedure?

Dr. Placik will make a small incision in the treatment area and insert a thin hollow tube, known as a cannula. Either general or local anesthesia will be administered according to the size of your treatment area and Dr. Placik’s recommendation. Based on the type of liposuction you receive, the unwanted fatty tissue, once loosened, is removed through a syringe or via a small vacuum. Though the procedure varies depending on the region of the body targeted, liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing you to return home the same day.

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

After your treatment, you may experience some swelling, soreness or mild bruising. Dr. Placik will recommend that you wear a compression garment for 1 to 2 weeks post procedure, which should help ease any discomfort that you may feel. The garment should also minimize swelling and increase the rate of healing. While the majority of patients can return to work after a week, it is important to avoid any strenuous activity for 4 to 6 weeks, including exercise or heavy lifting. You can typically begin to ease back into your workout routine within several weeks. Dr. Placik will provide you with detailed post-procedure care instructions.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Liposuction permanently removes fat from targeted areas for smooth contours and a dramatic outcome. If you maintain your ideal weight through a healthy lifestyle, you can expect long-lasting results. Weight gain, however, can create new fat deposits that may compromise your new look.

PRACTICE POLICY UPDATE REGARDING COVID-19

Coronavirus (Covid-19) Update

Updated March 24th, 2020

With businesses all around us closing by either mandate or voluntarily you may be wondering how long we will continue to operate, or even why we are still open at this point.

After serious consideration and in line with the recommendations of our State and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), we are limiting the practice until April 7th.

We are diligently monitoring conditions and recommendations from professional organizations such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and understand that the situation is ever-changing and may alter our plans at any point in the future

As physicians, we are cognizant of protecting our own patient population most at risk and the need to conserve our own limited resources. Actions have already been taken to postpone or cancel appointments and surgeries for patients who are best served staying home to limit potential exposure. We have also canceled or rescheduled appointments for services that are not immediately necessary in many cases.

Effective immediately the following will occur:

  • All procedures and in-person consultations will be limited until April 7th. This may be revised in the following week.
  • The office will be (not fully) staffed, and we will see our urgent post-surgical follow-ups.
  • We are instituting Virtual Consultations for all potential patients.
  • Many surgeries are rescheduled and some of the ones that are committed will occur on a per case basis.
  • No patient will ever have any financial recourse for our fees for rescheduling their procedures.

We are constantly updating our services and staffing according to the local and national recommendations and will always place your health and well-being as our top priority.

We continue to exercise all the latest recommendations that are handed down by the CDC. These include:

Staff have been fully informed and trained to understand the disease process and its modes of transmission.

  • All staff, vendors and ancillary personnel are being asked to refrain from coming to this office if they have any signs or symptoms of a cold or an upper respiratory tract infection.
  • Every patient is also being asked to refrain from coming to the office if they have any symptoms.
  • We are asking our patients about any pertinent travel history.
  • Hand-washing continues to be the most important mode of prevention. Although it is a part of what we constantly do, now we are doing so with heightened vigilance and attention.
  • We have instituted a “no handshakes no hug” policy for now.
  • We have asked all vendors that any unnecessary meetings are canceled until further notice.
  • Any exit and entrance from our office are followed by a protocol of changing shoes, scrubs and sanitization.
  • As we are an (NO accredited) medical facility, we are constantly sanitizing all surfaces. We have now vamped that up and our routine, multiple times a day, wiping down all surfaces, desks, door handles, keyboards and restroom facilities. (We have assigned a person that does so on a constant basis.)

As previous communications have shared, procedures and protocols have been put in place (and continue to evolve) to protect our employees in the workplace. However, no one can guarantee the absolute protection from infection or potential exposure despite recommended precautions being taken.

The virus can be transmitted before an infected person starts exhibiting symptoms. It is possible for a person to be infected and also not experience symptoms. We are doing everything possible to prevent people exposed or exhibiting symptoms from access to our facilities. Even with all of our precautions, exposure to patients with the COVID-19 virus can happen. When we become aware of any potential exposure, our response is immediate and actions are taken to protect everyone directly involved.

Experts are predicting that 40% of the Chicagoland population will be infected within the next month. Current information demonstrates that for 97% of the people infected the symptoms will be mild or flu-like. 3-5% of patients will require hospital care, and the mortality rate is less than 2%.

Risk of exposure will occur at every touchpoint of our daily lives outside of our home-- including gas stations, grocery stores, and medical facilities.

Although Covid-19 is a serious issue, we strongly believe that it will pass and hopefully make our infrastructure and our ability to deal with pandemics in this Country even better than it currently is. We are monitoring this situation on a real-time basis and will not sit back until we know that we have done everything possible to avoid unnecessary exposure.
