The times, they are a-changin’, especially in the world of plastic surgery. As we move further into 2013, new trends across the industry are developing, and the results have shocked even the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Last year, there were a record number of cosmetic procedures in the United States – 14.6 million to be precise. And while liposuction and breast augmentation have always been fan favorites, a new trend has emerged in the industry, leading plastic surgeons around the country to believe that we have entered a new age in cosmetic treatments.

An ASPS report found that the trend in cosmetic surgery and treatment is shifting from body procedures to facial procedures. There was a five percent growth in the number of minimally invasive facial procedures, making 2012 a record-setting year for facial treatments in the United States.

Topping the charts was Botox, the popular dermal injection treatment that is used to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. Botox has gained enormous appeal across the country, and especially here in Chicago, due to the fact that it is not permanent. Many individuals who have considered undergoing a rejuvenation or reconstructive procedure are afraid that they may not like the end result, and will be stuck with a look they aren’t pleased with.

The great thing about Botox is that the effects only last about four months or so. Patients are in full control over how much or how little Botox they want to have injected, so they can obtain the exact look they want. It is then no wonder that over 6.1 million Botox procedures were performed in 2012 – and that number is expected to rise this year.

Other popular facial cosmetic procedures that have been on the rise are facial fillers, hair removal treatments and chemical peels. For those who are looking for a more permanent change, facelift surgery, eyelid surgery and nose reshaping surgery have also been on the rise.

As far as body trends go, it seems as though it is the age of the buttocks. Breast augmentations led the way in 2011, but 2012 was all about buttocks enhancement, no doubt thanks to celebrities like Kim Kardashian, J-Lo, Beyoncé, and most recently, Pippa Middleton, who are proud to show off their curvier side.

There have been many trends in the U.S. as far as what the “ideal” body shape should be and many women (and men) have tried the “smaller is better” approach. However, it seems as though Hollywood’s leading ladies these days are embracing their curves and showing women that a voluptuous body has sex appeal in its own right.
