Woman in front of computerA double chin does double duty: it not only makes you look older but also makes you look heavier than your actual weight. The frustration of the double chin—which is notoriously resistant to dietary changes as well as new exercise habits—leads many men and women to consider submental liposuction (liposuction performed under the chin). This can feel like a pretty big surgery for such a little problem spot and one that can come with a hefty price tag to boot.

Recently, a new injection-based option for treating the double chin has just received approval from the FDA. Does this mean that a new treatment option for getting rid of that pesky double chin is finally on its way?

Fat-Dissolving Injectables

The new drug, which received a unanimous recommendation for FDA approval from an independent panel, is called Kybella. Developed by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals Inc., a simple injection of Kybella double chin treatment works by killing the fat cells found under the chin, leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed. This outpatient procedure is faster and more convenient than liposuction, which requires anesthesia and a lengthy recovery period. Kybella is also expected to be more affordable than under-the-chin lipo and is the first and only FDA-approved liposuction alternative for effectively eliminating a double chin.

FDA approval is a huge and important step forward, but Kythera will likely need a few months to prepare before their official launch into widespread availability. Once it’s offered publicly, do take the time to look for a board-certified plastic surgeon who is already knowledgeable about facial contouring and fat removal for the best possible results.
