Combination Facial Reconstructive Surgery in Chicago
Facial reconstructive surgery is a common plastic surgery procedure that both women and men in Chicago often seek. It is rare to find someone who has a perfectly sized and shaped nose or chin and features that create completely equal facial proportions. Symmetry in the face is one of the most important and life-changing benefits that plastic surgery can provide a patient. The face is the very first thing someone notices about another person, and it is the one area on the body that can’t really be hidden. Treatments such as Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery) and Genioplasty (chin reshaping surgery) can give patients the symmetry they have always desired, creating harmony and balance in the face.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery treatments in the country. It involves correcting any deformities, such as a deviated septum, or asymmetry in the nose or changing the overall shape to make the nose more aesthetically pleasing. The treatment can sought to correct damage done to the nose from an accident or to improve the overall appearance of the nose by reducing its size or changing the tip.
Here at Body Sculptor, Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Otto Placik performs reconstructive Rhinoplasty surgery for both cosmetic and health-improving reasons. This procedure can be performed on patients as young as the mid-teens and who desire both small or significant results. Dr. Placik takes the time to work with patients to make sure that results are natural-looking and create harmony with the patient’s natural features.
Dr. Placik also performs Chicago Genioplasty surgery, correcting several conditions such as a recessed, protruding or small chin, as well as improves the overall symmetry between the chin and the rest of the patient’s facial features. As with Rhinoplasty, the earliest recommended age for Genioplasty surgery is the mid-teen years, so as to ensure the jaw bone has attained its maximum growth and form.
But while Rhinoplasty and Genioplasty are both extremely popular plastic surgery treatments in Chicago, it is important that symmetry in the face is retained afterward. Following either surgery, the patient may feel as though their nose or chin does not fit with the overall configuration of the face, because changing one aspect of the face can significantly alter its overall symmetry. Additionally, after every nasal or chin reconstructive surgery procedure, it is common for the treated area to change slightly over the first few years after the treatment. For these reasons, it is often best to perform both surgeries at the same time, so any changes in symmetry can be corrected immediately.
The combination procedure of nasal and chin plastic surgery is a treatment that Dr. Placik has advocated for many years. As an experienced plastic surgeon in Chicago, Dr. Placik understands the importance of maintaining a natural, seamless balance between all features on the patient’s face and is constantly researching new procedures to enhance patient experience.
But while the combo surgery is something that has already been offered to Dr. Placik’s Chicago patients, a new study by a group of Italian researchers has offered significant proof that combination facial reconstructive surgery has been the best option for patients all along.
The study, led by Dr. Dario Bertossi, an associate professor in the department of surgery at the University of Verona, followed 90 patients who underwent Rhinoplasty and Genioplasty surgery simultaneously between January 2002 and January 2004. Each patient was examined for three years after their respective surgeries and the researchers found that over half (52 percent) of patients who had their chins enlarged maintained a “stable” profile during their three-year follow-up period, during which no more than a millimeter of change was reported.
“We can for sure improve facial profile with stable results with Rhinoplasty alone, but the association with Genioplasty is fundamental and necessary to achieve the best aesthetic result,” said Dr. Bertossi.
The combination treatment works especially well for patients who have a naturally small chin and are choosing to enlarge it through plastic surgery. Not only will performing both procedures at the same time result in better facial harmony for the patient, but having two surgeries performed at the same time eliminates the need for a second procedure and added trauma to the face and body.
Anyone who has been considering either procedure in Chicago can turn to Dr. Otto Placik for more information and to discuss the best approach for their particular needs and aesthetic goals.
