Alar Wedge Excision

The section of the nose that includes the nostrils and the columella is called the alar base. When parts of this area are too large or wide, they make the whole nose look this way. When the nostrils are too large or flared, they can be reduced using a type of alar base reduction called an alar wedge excision (a rhinoplasty procedure).

An alar wedge excision is also known as an external alar base reduction because the incision for it is made on the outside of the nostril rather than the inside. Once the incision is made, the tissue is trimmed away in order to shrink the overall size.
