Larger furrows, depressed areas, and volume losses (lips and cheeks) are treated with fat injections. It also enhances the effect of cosmetic surgery and is ideal for treating younger faces not yet in need of full surgical correction.
The fat is classically collected from the abdomen and immediately prepared for transfer to the face. Over-correction is necessary in order to compensate for the reabsorption which naturally occurs following injection. Two or more sessions may be required. The procedure is done in the physician's office or surgery center depending on the volume to be transferred. Local anesthetics are employed but may require intravenous sedation. You will notice some swelling and discoloration of the skin around the injection and donor sites which typically resolves over two to three weeks. Firmness of the treated area may persist for several weeks.
Viability of the transferred fat is possible and some long-term correction can be achieved.
