Recovery from Labiaplasty

Because labiaplasty involves surgery in such a delicate and personal area, concerns about recovery might weigh more on your mind than with other procedures. The recovery from labiaplasty is in many ways the same as that with other cosmetic surgery procedures, but there are some specific concerns.

After your surgery, Dr. Placik will give you explicit instructions about your recovery period. You’ll be asked to avoid sexual activity, as well as tampons and douching, for a period of time, usually at least four to six weeks. You’ll have to be sure to cleanse carefully, per Dr. Placik’s instructions, after urinating to keep your incisions as clean as possible. Dr. Placik will also discuss any issues specific to your situation.

You’ll have pain medication to help for the first few days, and ice packs will also help keep the swelling down. Be sure to follow your post-operative instructions precisely regarding both of these methods for the best results.

Recovery Time

Everyone heals at a different rate, so it’s hard to know how quickly your recovery will progress. The amount of time that your labia remain swollen will be a major factor, and this can vary from person to person.

As a general rule, you should rest for at least five days after the surgery. Because the genitals are constantly moving and being rubbed against by clothing if you’re up and about, you’ll need to keep yourself quiet to prevent friction on your incisions. Too much activity too early can cause additional swelling and even edema, which is swelling caused by the accumulation of fluid in the tissues.

Overall, the more closely you follow the instructions provided by Dr. Placik, the more likely you’ll be to have a quicker, more comfortable post-operative recovery. Both before and after surgery, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call.

If you are considering labiaplasty, and would like more information about likely recovery time or any specific concerns about recovery after labiaplasty, please contact Dr. Otto J. Placik Chicago or Arlington Heights, Illinois offices.
