Questions About Labiaplasty

What is labiaplasty?
Strictly speaking, it’s a procedure to reduce the size of the labia. It is also a term for several surgeries on the labia minora and labia majora, designed to improve their size, symmetry, and proportions. It is also used as an umbrella term to include other surgeries on the female genitalia such as clitoral unhooding and G-Spot Augmentation.

Is labiaplasty safe?
It’s as safe as any other surgery, and safest when done by an experienced and fully-qualified cosmetic surgeon. Surgical results can never be guaranteed, and all surgeries bring certain standard risks, even with top-of-the-line surgeons, such as:

  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Numbness
  • Adverse reactions to medication
  • Hypertrophic scars

There are remedies for most of these kinds of complications. Also, you can help your own recovery along safely by following Dr. Placik’s self-care instructions to the letter.

How is a labiaplasty done?

  • If you would like the labia minora to be smaller, for greater comfort or less embarrassment, a labia minora reduction can be done easily on an outpatient basis. There are two ways of approaching it. The simplest way is by removing the excess tissue on the edges and over-sewing the new edge. The other way is by leaving the edges alone, but making a “V” incision crossways in the labia and suturing the new edges together. The choice of approach will depend on your particular anatomy.
  • If you would like the labia majora to be smaller, this is a longer procedure, taking one hour or more. The incision is made between the inner and outer labia and a curved portion is removed from each side of the inner labia. This allows the outer labia to settle in closer.

How are fat injections used?
If the labia are lacking in desired fullness, whether because of age, weight loss or heredity, fat can be taken from another part of the body and injected into the labia majora. This takes about an hour and can be done along with another procedure.

Can liposuction be done on the labia?
Yes. If the labia bulge out too much, this extra fat can be removed by pubic liposuction. This is a simple and short procedure.

What is a pubic lift?
If the pubic and vaginal areas begin to sag and look older, they can be lifted by removal of excess skin above the pubic hair, and by removal of excess fat on the pubis. You can even have these done along with a tummy tuck.
