NECK SURGERY
(Cervicoplasty)

The neck is a popular area of concern for both men and women. Individuals of all ages may be bothered by a "double chin" or a full/fatty neck. Mature individuals are disturbed by the appearance of loose skin or a "turkey gobbler" which is frequently accompanied by jowls. Numerous elements contribute to the appearance of a youthful neck. The size and shape of the jaw and chin, salivary glands, the neck muscles and bones, fat deposits, and skin quality must be examined and treated.

An important element of a neck lift is the use of fat contouring and removal. Frequently, this can be achieved with liposuction alone ("double chin") through the use of small incisions hidden below the chin and behind the ears. Removing excess fat can result in a more trim, youthful line of the throat and jaw.

If the neck muscles have relaxed to form the so-called "turkey gobbler" look, they can be repaired to form a firm support for this area. Depending on the condition of the muscles this may only require a 1-2 inch hidden chin incision. This new approach extends the possibilities of correcting specific problems.

For the most part, correction of excessive skin and lax muscles is addressed utilizing a facelift (meloplasty)**. This procedure trims excess skin, fat, and/or muscles from your face and neck to provide a natural, more youthful appearance. It is not uncommon for people in their early forties to have a less extensive face and neck lift as an early measure against aging. In fact, new techniques require less surgery, especially if it is done earlier while the skin has more elasticity.

A small chin or jaw may create the illusion of a poorly defined or aged neck. Reshaping the chin with bone surgery or implants (genioplasty)** will yield a more proportionate appearance.

The extent of the procedure depends upon what changes are desired and what your surgeon deems appropriate. This surgery is most often performed on an outpatient basis under a local, intravenous, or a general anesthetic. Depending upon the extent of your surgery, and with or without facial surgery, the procedure usually takes from one to four hours. Compressive garments that support your neck are required for approximately 1 week. After surgery, there will be some discomfort that is controlled by medication. Swelling and skin discoloration are common and usually subside within a few weeks.
