One innovation available to physicians for improving wrinkles, scars, frown lines, furrows, grooves, depressed skin grafts, small or atrophic lips, cheek hollows, and other soft tissue defects is the use of tissue augmentation materials.
Fillers/implants may be donated from the same individual via surgery or obtained from commercial sources. Fillers/implants may be placed by injection or through surgical access incisions. Fillers/implants may be biologic (autogenous collagen, human donor collagen, bovine collagen, blood/gelatin, preserved human dermis, autogenous fat, autogenous tissue cultures, etc) or alloplastic (PTFE, ePTFE, etc). Implants are available in a variety of forms and marketed under numerous labels i.e., Zyderm®, Zyplast®, Fibril®, Alloderm®, Autologen®, Dermologen®, Isolagen®, Gortex®, SAM®, etc. Questions about the technique, size, and type of implant to be used, as well as any concerns about the safety and present status of fillers/implants will be discussed during consultation with your surgeon. Collagen injections and fat transfer/transplantation are currently the two most commonly performed procedures.
OTHERS:
Numerous other materials are available but are not as popular due to a variety of considerations which can be discussed during the consultation with your surgeon. However, some of these materials and techniques are useful when collagen injections or fat transfer are not an option.
