Endoscopy Cosmetic Surgery Questions
Serving Chicago, Illinois
What is endoscopy?
Endoscopy, or endoscopic cosmetic surgery, involves the use of a small, thin light and camera to help the surgeon better see specific areas inside the body. Endoscopy (which literally means “looking inside”) can be used in almost any area of the body, and it is considered a minimally invasive procedure, as it requires only a small incision.
What procedures use endoscopy?
Chicago Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Placik uses endoscopy to assist him in performing almost any procedure, especially as the use of endoscopy also means greater accuracy with smaller incisions. Dr. Placik may use endoscopy during such procedures as breast augmentations, tummy tucks, facelifts, and forehead lifts.
What does an endoscope look like, and how does it work?
An endoscope has two major parts. The first is the actual camera and light, which are attached to a long, thin tube. This is the part that is inserted into the body through a small incision. The other part is a viewing screen, which allows Dr. Placik to examine and magnify images, and guide the endoscope through the appropriate area of the body. The endoscope itself does not perform a surgical function, although it does help surgeons ensure accurate and appropriate procedures.
What risks are associated with endoscopy?
Generally, endoscopy comes with minimal risks when performed by a trained surgeon such as Dr. Placik. Still, a small percentage (fewer than 5%) of patients may experience one or more of the following complications: fluid beneath the skin, damage to blood vessels, internal perforation, damage to the skin, and infection. During an endoscopy, Dr. Placik will closely monitor your body’s reaction to the endoscope and, if necessary, will switch to a traditional open procedure.
Why should I consider endoscopy?
For most patients, the biggest benefit of endoscopy cosmetic surgery is that it results in smaller incisions and less scarring. Because of this, the recovery time is also shortened. Most of the time, the results from surgeries involving endoscopy are the same or better than open surgeries that do not involve the use of endoscopes. Finally, it is important to note that patients who do not have an abundance of loose-hanging skin make particularly good candidates for endoscopy.
