Face Lift & Neck Lift

Facelift Face Lift & Neck LiftSome of the more visible signs of aging through the lower face and upper neck include jowling, loose skin and loss of muscle tone. Together, these can leave men and women looking much older than their years. Facelift surgery, which is often combined with a neck lift, lifts and tightens the lower face for natural-looking results that leave you looking rejuvenated and refreshed.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Otto Placik is a facial rejuvenation specialist serving Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. In addition to facelifts, mini face lifts and neck lifts, Dr. Placik also offers a number of other facial cosmetic surgeries and med spa treatments that can enhance and complement the results of a full facelift.

Please contact us online or call our Chicago or Arlington Heights plastic surgery offices for more information on facelift surgery, including prices.

About Face Lift Surgery

As part of the natural aging process, the production of collagen – the substance that gives structural support to the skin – declines. In combination with gravity and gradual weakening of supportive tissues, this causes the skin and underlying muscles and healthy fatty fullness to slowly shift downward in placement while losing firmness and elasticity.

There are a few options that can help minimize the toll that aging can take on your lower face and neck:

  • Facelift: Tightens the underlying SMAS (muscle) layer to improve skin laxity from cheekbones to jaw line.
  • Mini Face Lift: Uses shorter incisions and requires less skin removal for a less invasive surgery and a more subtle level of correction.
  • Neck Lift: Helps eliminate “turkey neck” for a slimmer, smoother appearance through the upper neck by removing excess skin and tightening neck muscles. This is distinguished from the “double chin” which is usually treated with liposuction.
  • Adjunctive Procedures: In the strict sense, a facelift does not specifically address the chin, lips, mid-face, upper and lower eyelids, nose, cheeks, forehead/brow, skin or hairline. The supplementary procedures for treating these areas include skin resurfacing, fat transfer, injectable fillers and many other options that can be reviewed during your consultation.

During your consultation, Dr. Placik will discuss your options with you, as well as offer advice on the procedure or combination of procedures that he feels will best help you meet your cosmetic goals.

The actual surgical technique Dr. Placik uses will vary depending on your specific needs. Typically, any of the above options will include some degree of muscle repair and skin tightening, followed by the excision of any excess tissue.

Surgery usually takes between 2 to 4 hours. Dr. Placik will apply compressive dressings and ask you to wear them for a few days, as well as sleep with your head elevated for about a week. Any initial bruising and swelling should fade within 2 to 3 weeks, with results continuing to improve over the next few months.

Face Lift Surgery FAQs

Am I a candidate?

If you notice significant jowling around your jaw line, loose skin through your neck or sagging in the mid face, you may be a candidate for a facelift, neck lift or a combination of both. It’s important to understand that a facelift primarily addresses the lower face, and concerns related to aging through the upper face may be better improved with a different approach.

Will a facelift get rid of my frown lines and crow’s feet?

Facelift surgery improves the major signs of aging through the lower face, so the eye and forehead area will not be affected. For this reason, you may consider incorporating eyelid surgery, a brow lift, BOTOX® or other procedures that can help minimize lines, wrinkles or lax skin through the upper face.

Am I too young for a facelift?

While there’s no “perfect age” for scheduling a facelift, today’s advanced surgical techniques are more effective than ever, which has led to patients as young as their early 40s to come in for a less extensive mini face lift as a preventative measure to hold more the advanced signs of aging at bay for longer. There are also advantages to performing facelift surgery sooner rather than later, when the skin has more elasticity.

How much does a face lift or neck lift cost?

The price of any facial cosmetic surgery varies depending on a number of different factors, including the type of surgical approach that’s used, the level of correction that’s needed and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time. Dr. Placik’s fee, the cost for the surgical facility and the anesthesiologist’s fee are all included in the total cost. Dr. Placik and his staff strive to provide excellent value and can help you with cosmetic surgery financing to make your procedure even more affordable.

What can I expect during surgery and recovery?

With the help of minimally invasive surgical techniques, like endoscopy, most patients can enjoy a shorter surgery and faster recovery time overall compared even to just a decade or two ago. Your face will feel tight and sore initially, although this can often be managed with oral medication. Bruising and swelling should fade rapidly in the first week, and any residual discoloration can usually be covered by makeup by the second week of recovery.

What are the risks?

Facelift risks are similar to those associated with any other surgery, such as bleeding, infection or side effects associated with anesthesia. Less frequently, there may be concerns with contour irregularities, persistent numbness or pain or nerve injury. Although these more serious side effects are possible, they are also rare.

Dr. Placik promises you his best possible care and attention. If you would like to schedule a private consultation to learn more about facelift or neck lift surgery, please contact us online or call us at 847-398-1660.
