The eyes are considered the most expressive feature of the face. They are also known to reflect personality and mood. Unfortunately, eyes also show the first signs of aging. Droopy folds above and puffy bags beneath the eyes can make you look tired and add years to your appearance. Heredity is often a factor, with these problems sometimes occurring in people who are in their twenties and thirties.
Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is the cosmetic surgery procedure performed to eliminate these defects. If your vision is compromised, blepharoplasty is considered a functional procedure. In younger individuals, blepharoplasty of the lower eyelid is done to remove fatty tissue only. In older patients, it requires excision of excess skin as well.
During the eyelid surgery procedure, incisions are made in the upper and lower eyelids, following natural contour lines and creases, and often extending into a fine line at the eyelid's outer edge. Working through these incisions, the surgeon removes both the excess fat and skin. Following surgery, cold compresses are used to help reduce swelling and bruising. Most patients can return to light work in two or three days if appearance is not a major consideration.
The resulting scars are usually very faint when fully healed and nestle in the folds of me eyelids. Bruising and swelling may last from ten to fourteen days. Residual bruising can be covered by make-up. To allow for proper healing, you should avoid excessive physical activity, including exercise programs, for two to three weeks after eyelid surgery.
