Breast Implant Revision and Replacement
Breast augmentation is a great way for a woman to achieve the chest that she has always wanted. However, breast augmentation like many other medical procedures does involve a limited longevity. Nothing good lasts forever. Dr. Placik works with you to ensure that you get the most out of your breast augmentation and that when it comes time for revision or replacement you know all your options for the procedure.
Implant technology has improved tremendously over the last few years, creating implants that last longer. It is difficult to determine how long particular implants last due to the variety of techniques used today, as well as the individual body of the woman in which they were implanted.
Removal of breast implants
The removal of breast implants may take place for many reasons such as swapping for different size, making room for new implants, or due to problems with the implants. Implant removal is done under anesthesia and is performed differently depending on if you have silicone or saline implants.
If you have silicone implants, Dr. Placik will check for signs of rupture to make sure the implant is still intact, in order to minimize any risk with the removal. If the implants will not be replaced, a breast lift or scar revision may be performed at the time of the removal to recreate the natural look of your breasts.
If the implant is made of saline, Dr. Placik may choose to deflate it before removing it, which helps it to come out easier. The surgery itself lasts about a half hour to forty-five minutes.
Replacement of breast implants
If the implants are being replaced they can be done in the same procedure as the removal. The replacement implant can either be saline or silicone and can be different from the original implants you had. Dr. Placik will discuss with you both options and have the implant chosen before your surgery so that it can be placed immediately after your original implant has been removed.
One thing that Dr. Placik will discuss with you in regards to breast implant replacement is changing pockets. If you are reducing the size of implants, a smaller implant may not fit adequately in the pocket that was created for the original breast implant. If it is much smaller the implant may move around the pocket quite a bit. In order to prevent this, Dr. Placik will discuss with you options for the creation of a new pocket.
Nursing, Menopause and Breast Augmentation
Nursing your child is an important part of raising a child. It helps your child get the nutrients they need and creates a stronger bond between mother and child. While it is a meaningful stage in your life it can cause some changes to your breast- sometimes making them more saggy or deflated, for those with or without breast implants.
Menopause is another stage in a woman’s life that may affect the shape and look of her breasts. During menopause the levels of estrogen production shift and change focus which can have a physical impact. Breasts can become saggy and tender which can create a need for replacement of your implants or for additional revision procedures, such as a breast lift.
