Implant Augmentation

Breast AugmentationImplant-based breast augmentation uses silicone or saline implants to increase the size of the breasts. One of the most commonly performed of all plastic surgery procedures, breast implant augmentation can offer women a boost in body image and a renewed sense of self-confidence.

Dr. Otto Placik is a breast augmentation specialist and board-certified plastic surgeon who serves Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Dr. Placik has over 20 years of experience with breast implants and has helped thousands of women like you feel sexier and more confident about their figures with breast implants. In addition to breast augmentation using implants, Dr. Placik also offers fat transfer breast augmentation for women who prefer a natural approach to breast enlargement.

About Breast Implants

Although some women are comfortable with having smaller breasts, others rely on padded bras that can help give the illusion of larger breasts. Breast implants offer a permanent solution to increase your cup size instead of relying on your lingerie. Breast implants can also restore fullness to breasts that have been affected by pregnancy and nursing, weight fluctuation or age-related changes.

During your consultation, Dr. Placik will perform a physical exam and discuss your concerns, as well ask questions about the look you hope to achieve with implants. Based on your physical candidacy and your expectations, he will recommend a size, profile and surgical approach (incisions or “over” versus “under”) that he feels will best help you meet your cosmetic goals.

You’ll also need to decide if you want saline or silicone implants, each of which offers unique benefits:

  • Saline Breast Implants: Saline implants are typically less expensive than silicone, and can be inserted while deflated so that Dr. Placik can use a smaller incision. Saline implants are also available in post-operatively adjustable models.
  • Silicone Gel Breast Implants: A popular choice for breast augmentation, silicone gel implants move and feel more like real breast tissue. They are now available in an increasingly wider variety of shapes and sizes and profiles.
  • “Gummy Bear” Breast Implants: A newer silicone implant type, these highly cohesive form-stable implants are firm yet yielding, and are anatomically shaped for natural-looking breast augmentation results, particularly after breast reconstruction. However, they typically do not create the upper breast fullness that most patients seek.

Dr. Placik can help you look your best. See why you should choose him for your cosmetic procedure.

Dr. Placik will discuss the differences between implant types, as well as sizes and profiles, to help determine which is right for you. Incisional approaches (inframammary fold – breast crease, or areeola or axillary-armpit) and implant location over or under the muscle will be reviewed. If you have a significant amount of sagging in the breasts, Dr. Placik may also recommend including a breast lift for the best possible outcome. If you are choosing breast implants as part of a mommy makeover, then additional surgeries may be performed at the same time. In either case, breast augmentation is normally performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, so women can return home the same day as surgery.

After your surgery, a light compression bra will be wrapped around your body to support the breasts in the earliest stages of healing. Although you can expect some swelling, bruising and soreness the first few days, you should be able to return to work after about a week. Although each patient is unique, Dr. Placik will likely advise you to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting and exercising for approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Implant Augmentation FAQs

Am I a good candidate for implant augmentation?

The best candidates for breast implants are healthy overall, don’t smoke and have realistic expectations about what kind of results to expect after getting implants. Changing the appearance of your body is a big decision, and you should be mentally and emotionally prepared for the process. It’s important to make sure that breast augmentation is something you’re doing just for yourself, and not due to outside pressures from your peers or loved ones.

Should I choose over or under the muscle?

Dr. Placik, as well as the vast majority of the plastic surgery community, generally prefers implants placed under the muscle for a variety of reasons discussed during the consultation. In certain circumstances, patients may achieve a preferred outcome with placement over the muscle if they have sufficient tissue to cover the implant or proceed with a softer profile or smaller volume implant. Feel free to openly discuss your preferences so that your ideal result will be attained.

Which incision is best for me?

Incision placement will vary according to a variety of decisions that will be reviewed during the course of the consultation. Dr. Placik is comfortable with use of the nipple (areola), inframammary fold (breast crease) or transaxillary (armpit) incisions. He does not recommend the Transumbilical (TUBA) approach.

How do I select the implant size? Will I achieve my desired cup size?

This is probably the single most important concern patients express during the initial consultation. While some are worried about looking too big or too obvious or “too fake,” others feel that they want to see a noticeable and marked difference. Each individual’s goals and desired results will be addressed. Sizing often takes more than one appointment and we appreciate that this is the number one reason for the surgery. We use a variety of methods and tools to help you predict the outcome and achieve your desired breast size.

Should I choose silicone or saline implants?

There are many factors that go into choosing which implant is right for you, because each type of implant offers different benefits. For example, silicone gel and gummy bear breast implants look and feel more like your existing breast tissue with a subtle upper breast profile, while saline implants are typically more affordable and result in a slightly smaller scar. During your consultation, Dr. Placik will go into more detail about different types of implants to help you make an educated decision about which option would work best.

Can implants correct asymmetry between my breasts?

All women have some degree of asymmetry between their breasts, but a significant amount of unevenness can feel embarrassing. If you’re getting breast implants, Dr. Placik can often help correct breast asymmetry by using two implants of a different size and/or profile, or incorporating additional procedures such as a breast lift or breast reduction or fat transfer augmentation.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The average cost of breast augmentation varies depending on your surgeon, what type of implants you choose and whether you elect to include other procedures as part of your surgery. The total fees for your surgery include the cost for the surgical facility and anesthesiologist as well as Dr. Placik’s surgical fees. Dr. Placik and his staff strive to provide excellent value and can help you with flexible cosmetic surgery financing to make your breast augmentation even more affordable.

What are the risks?

During your consultation, Dr. Placik will cover all the possible risks and side effects that are associated with breast implants. These may include similar risks to those associated with any surgery, such as infection, bleeding or changes in sensation. Other potential complications include capsular contracture or breast surgery revision due to a faulty implant, but these are rare.

Dr. Placik promises you his best possible care and attention. If you would like to schedule a private consultation to learn more about implant augmentation, please contact us online or call us at 847-398-1660.
