Buttock and Thigh Lift (Thigh Dermolipectomy)

Chicago, Illinois

When the upper thigh has excess fullness which bulges out under the buttocks and your skin is excessively loose and sagging, a surgical procedure can be done to improve the appearance of this area.

The procedure involves undercutting the skin high up on the side of the thigh and buttocks, removing excess fat and trimming away the excess skin. The surgical scars are strategically placed so that you can wear most bathing suits. This approach is often done as a separate procedure or in conjunction with liposuction.

A similar skin and fat removal may be done for sagging inner thighs.

Return to work and light physical activity is usually possible in a week. More vigorous physical activity must be deferred for 3 to 6 weeks. Individual considerations will be discussed at the time of your consultation.

Butt Thigh Lift Questions

What is a buttock and thigh lift?

Buttock and thigh lifts (or lower body lifts or thigh dermolipectomy) address excess collections of skin and pockets of fat that cause bulging or sagging. During the lift, Chicago Plastic Surgeon Dr. Placik removes extra fat through an incision and trims skin, giving the buttocks and thighs a smoother, tighter appearance. Sometimes but not always, buttock and thigh lifts are performed at the same time as liposuction.

What causes the buttocks and thighs to sag?

For many women seeking treatment, sagging or bulging buttocks and thighs are not the result of overeating or lack of exercise. Rather, some parts of the body contain fatty deposits that are particularly resistant to the effects of dieting. In addition, genetics, pregnancy, and prolonged exposure to the sun can cause skin to sag and become looser over time.

Who makes a good candidate for a buttock and thigh lift?

Generally, the best candidates for buttock and thigh lifts are in good health, currently not on birth control pills and do not smoke; they are also realistic about what surgery can provide them. Because buttock and thigh lifts are not a substitute for proper diet and regular exercise, candidates should not view the procedure as a long-term strategy for weight loss or a treatment for obesity. Patients who have decreased skin elasticity also make particularly good candidates, as the lift can produce dramatic improvements in appearance.

What can I expect after the surgery?

Depending on the extent of the procedures, you may either be released immediately after surgery or be required to spend a night or two in the hospital to ensure proper care. Generally, patients manage any immediate pain through prescription medication; swelling and bruising usually begin to disappear within a month post-surgery. Dr. Placik advises patients to refrain from engaging in strenuous physical activity for up to six weeks, and the recovery period is fully complete four to six months after surgery.

What risks are associated with buttock and thigh lifts?

Although major complications are rare, some patients experience excessive swelling after having a buttock and thigh lift. Such swelling does resolve itself with time, however. Rarely, patients may notice asymmetries between the two sides of the body. Otherwise, most of the risks associated with buttock and thigh lifts are the same as those that apply to any major surgery, such as infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, blood clots and nerve damage. Dr. Placik exercises great care in ensuring that complications are rare and prevented whenever possible.
