Brachiaplasty (also Brachioplasty)

Chicago, Illinois

Medically known as brachiaplasty (or brachioplasty), an arm lift reduces excess skin and fat between the underarm and elbow; the excess skin may be due to significant weight loss or the natural loss of skin elasticity due to aging. Arm lifts are recommended for patients who are not significantly overweight; arm lifts are not a means of weight loss. The arm lift procedure is often performed after a successful weight loss program has left you with sagging skin in the underarm area. It is important that you are in good general health, do not smoke, and that you have realistic expectations about what this procedure will do for you. If you are embarrassed by excess skin and fat in the upper arm area and meet certain criteria, Chicago area cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Otto J. Placik may be able to perform brachiaplasty on you.

Before and After an Arm Lift

There are various ways to perform an arm lift. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Placik will decide which procedure is best for you. An upper arm lift incision may run the entire length of the inside part of your upper arm, or the incision may run from the armpit to the elbow on the back of the arm. Some patients combine brachiaplasty with liposuction with the fat suctioned out first, and then the excess skin removed before closing the incision. In a mini arm lift, less skin is removed, and the incision is smaller.

Prior to an arm lift, Dr. Placik will examine you and get a complete medical history. You will discuss pre-existing health conditions, whether or not you exercise, and medication, alcohol and tobacco use. The more Dr. Placik knows about you, the better able he is to determine if you are a candidate for brachiaplasty.

The procedure is done on an out-patient basis; general anesthesia is typically used. The procedure usually takes about two hours. Dr. Placik will provide very detailed pre- and post-operative instructions. Though not all patients recover in the same amount of time, most patients are able to return to work within a week or two; complete recovery can take up to six weeks.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved with brachiaplasty including bleeding, infection at the incision site, pain and swelling. Again, Dr. Placik will discuss all details of the procedure during your consultation with him.
