How Nipples Become Inverted and How to Fix Them

Frequently, women (and, sometimes, men) express deep insecurities about having inverted nipples. Although genetics is the most common cause of inverted nipples, the condition can also be cause by other factors, from breast trauma to breastfeeding difficulties to other medical conditions. Regardless of cause, fibers within the breast pull the nipple inward to varying degrees, causing nipples that range from mildly to severely inverted. Some people are born with inverted nipples, whereas others encounter this problem as adults.

Once a person determines that his or her inverted nipples are not a symptom of a more serious medical problem, that person might want to research treatment options. Some people try non-surgery options, such as nipple piercings and nipple massage, but these treatments often do not product permanent results. Fortunately, thanks to available technology, inverted nipples are relatively easy to fix through surgery, regardless of severity. Here at the office of Dr. Placik, we work closely with patients to provide surgical treatment that is comfortable and permanent.
